Rebecca had a quick stopover in Hobart before embarking on her Holland America cruise and needless to say wished she had longer to explore the cities delights – but there’s always next time!
Hobart is one of Australia’s most picturesque capital cities; it is a perfect mix of old and new. The magnificent River Derwent and stunning harbour are at the cities heart while the imposing Mount Wellington dominates the western panorama. Many of the 19th century sandstone warehouses around the harbour fringe have been restored. They now serve as home to cafes and restaurants and showcase some of the best culinary experiences of the southern antipodes.
Salamanca Place is a trendy spot featuring a number of chic restaurants and wine bars. The Salamanca Market is held every Saturday and should be included in any visit to Hobart. It’s a showcase of food, arts and entertainment.
A great range of stylish accommodation is available. I stayed at the fabulous Somerset on the Pier which is housed in a converted pier building from the 1930’s. The hotel has an old-world charm with contemporary style and is conveniently located on the shores of Hobart’s waterfront. It is within walking distance to the CBD, restaurants, shopping, the cruise terminal as well as main attractions including Salamanca Place. Each serviced apartment has stunning panoramic views of the River Derwent and Sullivan’s Cove and is ideal for a weekend or an extended stay.
There are many day tour options if you choose to base yourself in Hobart. You can take to the water on an eco-cruise of the harbour where you will witness wildlife and stunning scenery or perhaps hire a car to tour the Huon region south of Hobart sampling the food, wine, wilderness and visit Hastings Caves. You can walk amongst the treetops at Tahune or take some time to visit Historic Port Arthur just a 90 minute drive from Hobart. Bruny Island, Wineglass Bay & Freycinet, Tasmanian Devil Unzoo are just to name a few more!
Fill in an entire day with a visit to Mona (Museum of Old and New Art). A short catamaran ride from Brooke St Pier in Hobart, be prepared to be amazed! Mona is Australia’s largest privately-funded museum with loads of unique displays. The museum is built underground – an amazing engineering feat. A controversial collection of art and experiences, the museum has been described as interesting, provocative, different, thought-provoking, unique and quirky. It is definitely a must-do but be prepared to take the time to understand what Mona is all about. Not really recommended for children. The Mona grounds are also worth exploring separate to the museum itself as it is a part of the Morilla winery.
If Tasmania is on your to-do list I would definitely recommend an extended stay in Hobart.
