With Valentine’s Day coming up love is in the air this weekend which also so happens to be my wedding anniversary. With this in mind it’s appropriate to explore romantic destinations. Who doesn’t love a little romance in their life!
For me Paris has to top the list for romantic destinations, what is not to love about this beautiful city? Picturesque bridges, outdoor cafes, sweeping boulevards and the iconic Eiffel Tower personify romance like no other city. Stroll along the river Seine, picnic amid the flowers of beautiful Luxembourg Garden or enjoy the sunset from the top of Montmarte as the city of lights sparkle below.
One of my favourite things is to book a table at Le George, located on the 6th floor of the Pompidou Centre to enjoy the delicious food with the Eiffel Tower as a back drop. Another is sipping a cocktail at Le Perchoir with its amazing views of Sacre Coeur. The list just goes on and on.
Then there is Venice with its famous canals, stunning architecture and mysterious passageways – a perfect hideaway for lovers. Glide down one of the many canals in a gondola, dine by candlelight or take a moonlit stroll through Piazza San Marco. Catch a performance by the Ineterpreti Veneziani, a group of musicians who have been playing baroque works, including plenty of Vivaldi since 1987. The concerts take place most nights at the deconsecrated church of San Vidal.
Next to the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro district the canals and streets narrow and the city assumes a village atmosphere. Shop for romantic gifts like Venetian masks and Murano glass in the quiet alleyways where you will find that special keepsake to cherish forever.
Buenos Aires, the birthplace of the sensual tango is an incredibly romantic city. Sultry dancing, beautiful food, a rich late night cafe culture and feisty Latino’s all make this one hot destination. The old neighbourhoods present captivating corners and enticing restaurants to linger in. Dance the night away or simply watch the locals strut their stuff at one of the many nightclubs. For intimate moments the rooftop terraces of the Palacio Barolo offer spectacular views of Avenida de Mayo and Plaza Congreso.
Tropical Bora Bora, considered by many to be the ultimate honeymoon destination, has to be one of the most romantic islands in the world. Glide over the clear-blue waters in a glass-bottom boat, share a midnight dinner on the beach with someone special and fall captive to this magical Polynesian island.
There are so many romantic places in the world it is hard to choose and although I have listed Paris as my number one, I’ve had many romantic moments sitting by a camp fire at Pebbly Beach. At the end of the day it is more about the person you are sharing with rather than the destination!
