Agra, India - Alan and Glenda Halliwell

Agra is home to the Taj Mahal which reigns supreme as the iconic image of India. The mausoleum’s delicate minarets, gracefully curved archways and ice cream scoop domes have enticed countless travellers to make the pilgrimage to stand at the entrance and wonder at its grandeur. The wonder isn’t only found in its construction, it is also rich in a history that has its own unique bewitching appeal.

Earlier this year I enjoyed my second visit to the Taj Mahal. This symbol of undying love is one of the seven Wonders of the Modern World and one of the most beautiful buildings in India. It was equally as beautiful the second time around! My sunrise visit was probably the best time to appreciate its great beauty as the light is softer and it is at its most atmospheric. I queued for an hour before the gates opened but it was well worth the wait.

The marble mausoleum is inlaid with calligraphy, precious and semi-precious stones and intricate flower designs. Since childhood I was fascinated by the Taj and the love story between Shah Jahan and his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal to whom the building is dedicated.

Agra has actually not just one, but an impressive three UNESCO world heritage sites including Agra Fort which was built by the 14-year-old Emperor Akbar to illustrate his power over his empire. The building is made mostly out of red sandstone and is truly stunning. The Fort was added to by the Emperor Shah Jahan, and is a short distance from his more famous building work, the Taj Mahal. Ironically Shah Jahan was also kept as a prisoner here, by his own fratricidal son. Views of the Taj Mahal from his prison may have comforted the deposed Emperor.

Agra flourished under the patronage of the Mughals who ruled India for more than 300 years.  Artisans were attracted from many countries to build amazing monuments including the Taj Mahal.  Here layers can be peeled away to reveal an amazing tapestry of life, of wars waged, of great architectural magnificence and above all the testimony of the undying love of a king for his queen.

Agra is located a half day drive from Delhi and is a contrast of red sandstone and white marble edifices. Like most cities in India the traffic’s atrocious and getting around is slow but the passing parade keeps you company.
