Ashley: Coral Coast, Fiji

One of my senior travel consultants, Ashley Eather, recently holidayed with his family on Fiji’s Coral Coast. The scenic coastline is a stretch of beaches and bays along the Ocean Road between Nadi and Suva. Located on the southern shores of Vitu Levu, Fiji’s main island, it is an easy transfer from Nadi Airport.

Sigatoka is the main town on the Coral Coast and is the birth place of tourism for Fiji with the opening of the Korolevu Beach Hotel in the 1950’s. Today the Coral Coast is well known for its family friendly resorts.  The coast is also home to many local villages where holiday makers can visit to get a glimpse of the real Fiji.

With miles of shoreline and its close proximity to the Sigatoka River there is an abundance of water sports.  From snorkelling or diving around the coral reefs to fast paced jet boat safaris on the river.

Ashley’s whole family loved the Sigatoka River jet boat safari. History lessons can be quite boring for a nine and six-year-old, however learning about the region’s cannibal past whilst speeding along the longest river on the island literally made their hair stand on end!

The safari included a visit to a local village – complete with singing, dancing, kava ceremony and traditional lunch. Sigatoka River Safari is careful to visit a different village every day, to minimise the impact of tourism on the village lifestyle in this remote part of the world.

Their return trip on jet boat was a little more action-packed with the driver doing a few 360’s – much to everyone’s delight! By the end of the safari, everyone’s cheeks were sore from smiling and their arms sore from waving to the children from the many villages that line the river.

Ashley’s family stayed at the gorgeous InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa, located along picturesque Natadola Bay. Purposely designed to imitate a charming and traditional Fijian village, the five-star resort is ideal for a luxury getaway. Think swaying coconut palms, rambling gardens, awesome water sports, vibrant coral reefs and a pristine golf course.

Nestled amongst 35 acres of tropical gardens, the InterContinental boasts one of the most beautiful settings among Fiji resorts.  Protected by a reef which creates an aqua-blue ocean-facing lagoon, Natadola Beach has been voted one of the best beaches in the world.

Captivating design, world-class dining, a luxury spa, three swimming pools, an 18-hole championship golf course, kid’s club, wedding pavilion, state of the art conference facilities as well as authentic Fijian hospitality and experiences combine to create one of the most magnificent luxury resorts in Fiji and the South Pacific.

Fiji is such an easy holiday destination and has something to offer everyone; families, romantic getaways, indulgent breaks, weddings or an island cruise.  The year-round warm climate makes this island of smiles the ideal holiday location.

Pop in to our office at 15 Park Avenue, Coffs Harbour to talk to Ashley about his holiday!
