The European Christmas markets, also known as Christkindlmarkt date back to the late middle ages. Traditionally they are held in the four weeks of Advent and embellish the expression of joy in the heart for the Festive Season.
The old cobblestone town centres are the normal venue for the markets where, surrounded by historic houses and churches, local craftsmen, restaurateurs and ordinary townsfolk set up shop in rows of wooden stalls. On offer there is everything from mulled wine served from giant, steaming cauldrons to handcrafted wooden toys, pottery, gifts and colourful decorations. The markets that fill up the town and city centres of continental Europe throughout December are definitely a sign that Santa is on his way.
The markets are a family affair and while children wrapped in woollen hats and bright red mittens enjoy merry-go-rounds parents scrutinise the freshly cut Christmas trees, looking for that one perfect tree to take home. There’s entertainment too with brass bands and carol singers assembled on ancient stone steps competing with the sizzle of bratwurst sausages and the raised voices of locals intent on laughter and happiness.
The first Christmas markets, 500 years ago were ablaze with lanterns and braziers. Today the light comes from twinkling electric bulbs but bonhomie and fun still prevail.
Christmas markets are an intoxicating mixture of sights, sounds, smells, anticipation and nostalgia. The smell of roasting chestnuts, sweet candies, smoked hams, mulled wine and beautiful cakes will make your mouth water. You’ll find wooden stalls displaying traditional crafts that range from quirky little characters made from fruit and dressed in traditional costumes to beautifully carved and painted nativity figures. In the fairy tale villages which are decked out in their holiday finery you’ll also find exquisite ornaments and fine contemporary crafts.
Experiencing a European Christmas is unforgettable. It truly is a magical time of the year, touching the hearts of both young and old. I just love Europe at Christmas time and I’m sure you will also.
