Nepal – A Country at the Top of the World

Wedged between the high Himalayas and the steamy Indian plains, this spectacular region is a contrast of snowy peaks, sherpas, yaks, yetis, monasteries and mantras. Nepal is also a fascinating blend of ancient history, vibrant cultures and scenic grandeur of amazing extremes. Ethnic diversity and a climate ranging from alpine to temperate to tropical add to its unique character that has been attracting travellers for centuries.

The compact kingdom is bordered by India and Tibet and contains eight of the world’s tallest mountains. The population of Nepal is 26 million comprising of 101 ethnic groups speaking over 92 languages. Customs and traditions differ from one part of Nepal to another. Kathmandu Valley has served as the location of the country’s cultural metropolis since the unification of Nepal in the 18th century.  A conglomeration of cultures blend here to form a national identity.

Kathmandu has an exotic setting, with 2,000-year-old Buddhist stupas and ancient temples set amidst some of nature’s most awe-inspiring scenery. Ancient temples and myths abound in the valley of gods and exemplify the blend of Hinduism and Buddhism that pervades in the day to day life of Nepal’s people.

Kathmandu has suffered from overcrowding, lack of infrastructure and earthquakes, it can be confronting for the first-time visitor. The regional towns and villages hold the real charm and places like Pokhara are popular for trekkers as a base for exploring the mountain trails for which Nepal is renowned. The Rhododenron forests are beautiful when in full flower and the mountain locals are hospitable and friendly; the mountain views just spectacular. There are guided treks to suit all levels of fitness from easy grades to full mountain climbing. Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world and has long attracted the attention of climbers

Chitwan National Park is recognized as one of the best preserved wild areas in all Asia and has a fascinating range of wildlife roaming free. Among the thriving animal population are the endangered one-horned rhinoceros and the sought-after Royal Bengal tiger. The park offers elephant safaris, nature walks and tours by jeep or boat. While the park is open all year-round, the best time to visit is between October and May.

The roads can be treacherous particularly through the river valleys where it is not uncommon to see the remains of trucks, buses and cars in crumpled heaps 100 metres or more below on the river banks. Travelling by local bus is not for the faint hearted!

The entire length and breadth of Nepal is a paradise for trekkers, thrill seekers and religious solitude.  Climatic conditions vary from one place to another in accordance with their geographical features. In the north summers are cool and winters severe, while in the south summers are tropical and winters are mild. Nepal has five seasons: spring, summer, monsoon, autumn and winter.
