Ashley: Singita Sweni Lodge, Africa

After my first few days in Kruger at Sabi Sabi staying in beautiful accommodation, eating like a king and seeing a huge range of wildlife, I thought life couldn’t get any better, then I was transferred to my next lodge and a whole new array of luxury and adventure.

Singita Sweni Lodge is located in the private Singita Lebombo concession, in the game-rich northern Kruger region.  The stunning lodge is nestled amongst hundreds of trees at the edge of the Sweni River and is a level of indulgence rarely experienced. From the balcony of my luxurious suite I was treated to up-close sightings of an incredible number of animals and birds that wander down to drink or wallow in the river.

The landscape and wildlife in this region are completely different to the Sabi Sands game reserve and the 33,000 acre private concession is renowned for spotting Africa’s Big Five. This mountainous region is just beautiful and the game viewing was excellent.  I spotted a variety of wildlife including elephant, leopard, rhino, buffalo, hippopotamus and famously large prides of lion – the Big Five plus more, just amazing.

After an afternoon game drive and a delicious three course dinner it was time for bed. I could either sleep in my king size bed inside my luxuriously appointed suite or sleep under the stars on an out-door bed set up on the elevated balcony. What an incredible experience to be out in the fresh African air listening to hippos in the river below. I lasted about an hour before returning to the comfort of my suite!

The next morning, we were greeted with coffee and muffins before embarking on our morning game drive. We came across a herd of over 200 cape buffalo being pursued by a pride of five male lions, including a rare white lion. Stopping on the banks of the river for morning tea we were surprised by a herd of over 20 elephants drinking and playing in the water.

That evening I enjoyed a traditional African Boma dinner. An outdoor kitchen is set up as you dine by the fire under the stars. This also included a performance of singing and dancing by the local community.

It was a dream come true to experience the safaris and what this amazing country has to offer. I highly recommend adding a safari to your list of must do adventures. All too soon my incredible safari life is over and I head off to Cape Town.
